Fundraising Bollywood Pub Quiz

Burnt Roti Fundraising for Southall Black Sisters

We’re delighted to announce that Burnt Roti will be holding a Bollywood Pub Quiz on Thursday 10th November at The Star Pub in Hackney Downs with all proceeds going to Southall Black Sisters.

Sharan Dhaliwal Editor-In-Chief at Burnt Roti Magazine set up the magazine to celebrate the talent and beauty of South Asian people and their culture.

“I’m a freelance designer and videographer who, after a series of jobs, finally found my place in the world. I grew up by pushing away and denying myself from my Indian family and culture, until I finally allowed myself to embrace it, finding it then opened more doors and answered questions I previously had.

I set up Burnt Roti during a lull in my work and decided that (as I hit my 30s and began rediscovering my cultural heritage), it was about time I finally creating a magazine like I’ve always wanted. After the idea was born, more ideas grew out of it and it’s become the ever-learning online and print publication it is now. It aims to celebrate the talent and beauty of South Asian people and their culture.

Then one day she decided she wanted to create a magazine, giving South Asians a platform to talk about and showcase talent. And just like that, Burnt Roti was born. With a little help from crowdfunding, a lot of panic and stress, she published her first print issue in April 2016. She launched the online magazine in May 2016 and the YouTube channel has previews of upcoming videos!

The event is aimed at all the London based desi’s who love Bollywood, but have limited ways of celebrating this. We’re hoping to hold more events where possible – either more quizzes or screenings, live shows and so on. With the popularity of Burnt Roti growing, it’s giving me the drive to set up these spaces for South Asians in the UK.

As a Hounslow girl, I’ve been aware of Southall Black Sisters for a while, and have always found their work admirable. Anything that stands against the patriarchal ideal of a woman instantly has my attention.”
